Final Cut Down Day

Today is the day that all NFL team must cut their rosters to 53. The deadline is 6 pm EST today but some teams are already starting the process. Some of the notable cuts thus far announced are that may have fantasy football impact are:

Jets - K Dan Carpenter - yes this is the second team he had been cut from in the past two weeks.

Bills - QB Matt Leinart - this must mean that EJ Manuel is going to be ready soon. Although they may start with Tuel as Kolb is rumored to be on IR to start the season.

Patriots - TE Jake Ballard and Daniel Fells were cut to make room for Gronk as his timetable to return will be sooner than originally anticipated. Then again some believe the Hernandez will beat his murder wrap too.

Jaguars - CB Marcus Trufant - why mention a D player - well because if you were thinking of the Jag's D you may want to know this - then again if you are thinking about the Jag's D you are either in a deep league or need your head checked.

Broncos - RB Lance Ball - not a major threat to get the rock this year but it does round the RB situation into picture.

Eagles DE Joe Kruger - not cut but put on IR and that could be a impact for the Eagles D.

Cardinals - OL Jonathan Cooper will be on IR to start the season - big loss for the O line that was to be average this year - leaves big concern for Palmer staying up right and Mendenhall running game.

Seahawks - CB Antoine Winfield - normally a big deal but with the Secondary the Seahawks have it was tough for veteran Winfield to make the squad. This could mean that the Vikings could pick him back up.

Stay tuned as more cuts will be coming down the pipe line not to mention who will be the starting QB for the Jets and the Raiders. Also, will Lamar Miller or Daniel Thomas be the lead back in Miami?

Cut Down Day Round 1

Today all NFL teams had to be down to 75 players in the first round of cuts prior to the start of the season. Everyone will be playing on Thursday for the final preseason game then more cuts will follow.

For those playing Fantasy Football the cuts today will have very little impact. Some of the notables cut don't even factor in but do include - TE Visanthe Shiancoe, WR Devin Aromashodu, WR Chaz Schilens, K Dan Carpenter, K Billy Cundiff, WR Braylon Edwards. For an updated list of all others, as of my typing, http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000233304/article/roster-cuts-for-all-32-nfl-teams

In other news with bigger fantasy football impact is that DuJuan Harris is done for the season, Mario Hardesty in on injured reserve, Jonathon Stewart is to start on the PUP list, and the Saints lost Will SMith for the year.

Just two weeks left to go

Just two weeks left to go until the start of the NFL season. Okay two weeks and a day. Starting Friday I start my string of drafts for Fantasy Football. On Friday it will kick off with an auction draft. Some players are already off the board as they were kept from last season.

The players kept are: Andrew Luck $15, AJ Green $36, AP $42, T. Richardson $38, B. Marshall $33, and D. Martin $31. I did not keep a player as I didn't see any players worth keeping that I think I could get at similar or less cost than I paid last year. Rumor has it that we will be down a few teams this year due to schedule conflicts. The annual drama around when the draft is going to be is a bane of mine. I just wish leagues would set the day and time that a draft will take place annually and owners need to mark their calendars accordingly.

We will all get $200 cap room to fill our 14 team roster. In this league, I must start 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR/TE, Flex (RB/WR/TE), K and a D. Typically I try to get three solid RB's by allocating roughly 50% of my funds on RB's due to the flex option. Then again, there are a few second tier WR's or TE's that may fill the bill as well for that flex position. Brees, Rodgers, P-Manning, and Brady will all demand top dollar. If I keep $40 for QB's then I don't see I can go for one of these.

On Sunday is another draft that contains keepers. We are able to keep a player for two years in a row and up to two players a year but they cannot be from the same position. We also get to keep a developmental player if we drafted a rookie the year before That keeper means we must give up a draft pick 2 rounds earlier than last year draft. I didn't draft a rookie last year so I am left picking 12th since I won the league last year. No snake draft either. I have Megatron, Julio and Graham as my WR corp..I will keep Megatron as he won't last til the 12th pick. My RB's are pathetic - Stephen Jackson, Vick Ballard, Marcel Reece, Bryce Brown, and Wells. Question for this draft is do I keep a RB or do I keep Graham as the 24th pick?

Well back to the news sources to make sure I have my eye on all the updates. Some notable information that I read over the past days.

1. Cruz is on crutches - should be ready for week 1.
2. RGIII - sounds like could be out til Washington's bye week.
3. L.Bell - foot injury has him out for 4-6 weeks
4. D. Keller - gone for the season
5. Vick is the starter for Chip Kelley and the Eagles.
6. Weeden is the starter in Cleveland - wasn't sure that was in question.
7. Jonathon Stewart may start the year on the PUP list

Stay tuned for more updates as the week go on. Also, does anyone have a great auction value website?

Preseason Week 2 Saturday games

Another slate of games took place on Saturday but before I take a look at the local rags reactions and offer up some my own there was other news made on Saturday that may have fantasy football importance. Eddie Royal was taken from Charger practice field by ambulance and EJ Manuel will undergo surgery that will prevent him from playing anymore in the preseason. Now to the games.

Denver Broncos ventured into Seattle and took on the Seahawks. The Seahawks trounced the Broncos 40-10. While Manning should well moving the ball around, it was the running game that floundered against the stingy Seahawk D. After the game Peyton Manning quipped, "I don't know who makes those predicitions {retort to Vegas making Broncos odds on favorite to win Super Bowl} and what weight those really carry, but we have a lot of things we need to fix and correct. I do think there are things that are correctable. But we have to do it. We can't keep saying we're going to correct it. we've got to go out and do it." (http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_23886384/wolfe-injury-adds-list-worries). The D did take a hit with the Derek Wolfe getting hurt in the first quarter - early reports it was neck and spine injury - more to come. Russell Wilson and company moved the ball at will  and the Seahawks D forced turnover and pressured Manning to no end. Jermaine Kearse saw a lot of action and could provide Wilson with another weapon in the passing game.

Houston Texans beat the Miami Dolphins 24-17. Wallace and Tannenhill used the game to work on their timing and looked to start clicking. That is good for Dolphin fans as Wallace does have a good compliment with Hartline. The Dolphin passing game did take a blow as tight end Dustin Keller looked to injury his knee and could be out for the year. The Texans started off rough, but Schaub did end up finding his groove. Nothing really to worry about there as Foster will carry this team. Texans are still looking for a compliment WR to AJ.

Green Bay out dueled the St Louis Rams 19-7. Rodgers moved the ball around fairly well despite not having his top WR's. Main target was TE Finley. Nelson and Cobb are both expected to be back though for the season opener. The question for the Packers is the RB and it appears that but rookie RB Lacy played exclusively with the first team and didn't disappoint. On the other side of the field, the Rams are looking to see who will replace Steven Jackson and Isaiah Pead got a chance last night to show off his talents. Unfortunately for Pead 11 carries for 21 yards will not be enough to secure the starting job.

The New York Jets trounced Jacksonville Jaguars 37-13 mainly due to the extended period of time that Sanchez played. Due to injuries to Geno Smith and only have three QB's on the roster Sanchez played into the third quarter. Sanchez showed signs of brilliance then displayed actions that led Ryan to drafting Smith. While everyone is focused on the QB challenge a RB challenge is going on too. Powell looked to put his name at the top of the heap but Ivory is not far behind. The Jets D is not the same without Revis and Gabbert showed that as he moved the ball very well. MJD looked a little rusty but still should carry the load.

Cincinnati Bengals beat the Tennessee Titans 27-19. The Law Firm didn't play with allowed rookie RB Bernard an opportunity to shine - Bernard didn't disappoint. Dalton looked in regular season form as well. Locker and company looked horrible and could have lost Kendall Wright who tweaked his knee - as of this morning no local paper is reporting a MRI report result yet.

Finally we have Arizona Cardinals and the Dallas Cowboys. The game was more of a baseball game with the Cardinals kicker getting the most work out of the deal. Turnover marred the Cowboys all game long while the Cardinals couldn't finish drives. Unfortunately there wasn't anything really to speak of from the either O as they both sputtered along.

Week 2 Preseason Friday Games

Friday night saw another set of 4 games of action. A few scares took place as well during the games too.

The Buffalo Bills beat the Minnesota Vikings 20-16. Kevin Kolb started things off with the Bills this week and didn't play very well. EJ Manuel looked a lot better. On the first drive the EJ piloted resulted in a TD but the thing that was most impressive was he hit his fourth target after surveying the red zone. Christian Ponder looked horrible. Then again Ponder make look better when AP is the running back and not Toby Gehart. Then again Matt Cassell didn't look much better when he got into the game.

San Fransico 49ers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 15-13. Alex Smith did play the entire first half and looked pretty good. Chiefs didn't have Jamaal Charles - and it doesn't sound like he will play the rest of the preseason either - while Kap only played 3 plays. San Fran's D did get some pressure on Smith as well. Gore ripped off a 50 plus run against the Chiefs first team D.

New England Patriots beat the Tampa Buccaneers 25-21. The big question going into the game was how Tom Brady would react after banging his knee in practice early in the week. Well it didn't take long as Brady and Amendola show came out from the get go. Doug Martin got stung while blocking but things will be okay going forward. Mike Glennon clearly looked better than Josh Freeman in this game. It could be an issue going forward. Tiebow - not that anyone thought it to be - definitely won't be challenging Mallett for the second string position.

New Orleans Saints won 28-20 over the Oakland Raiders. Drew Brees looked great and found a new target in Nick Toon. Flynn didn't look at all comfortable and it didn't help that Valdheer is out either. Going to be a long season for the Raiders. McFadden struggled as well to get through the holes opened up.

Week 2 Preseason

Last night we saw four games of the second week of the Preseason. Let's see what took place and what the local beat writers said about their teams.

Atlanta Falcons played the Baltimore Ravens which the Ravens won 27-23. The Falcons first teamers had their way with the Ravens D. Julio had three catches including one for TD on the first drive alone. Jackson ran the ball like a RB with fresh legs. The only concern was that Roddy White left the first quarter with a sprained ankle. The Ravens O did very little against the Falcons first team D despite the quick hit pass from Flacco to Smith for a 77 yard touchdown.Mike Preston, of the Baltimore Sun, rips up the Ravens thus far by slamming the poor passing of Flacco and ,"we've heard about offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie and Courtney Upsahw being overweight and John Harbaugh talked about the Ravens having to address the No. 2 and No. 3 receiver positions."http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/bs-sp-preston-ravens-column-0817-20130816,0,3923997.column OUCH!

Cleveland Browns showed up against the Detroit Lions with a 24-6 win. Unfortunately for the Browns, who have already lost Hardesty, lost another running back to a broken leg. Dion Lewis will undergo surgery on a fracture fibula. The Browns also lost linebacker Barkevious Mingo left the game with a bruised lung and remained in the hospital overnight. On the bright side, Weeden looked like a seasoned PRO and may have found a new WR in Jordan Cameron. Stafford and company played terrible despite Megatron not playing due to a precaution with the bruised knee. Jim Schwartz said, "We were poor in all three phases. On offense we had dropped balls, we didn't execute, we didn't move the ball, we didn't have any explosive plays and didn't score any touchdowns." http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130816/SPORTS0101/308150123/1126/Lions-sputter-after-spotting-Browns-early-lead-exhibition-loss. Probably the best hit was given by Bell who took out a streaker.

Carolina Panthers fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 14-9. The Eagles have a dilemna on their hands as both Mike Vick and Nick Foles played well. Beat writer for the Eagles Jeff McLane believes that Vick has the edge over Foles. Here is his article on other observations from the game: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq-eagles/Eagles-Panthers-What-Did-We-Learn.html. The Panthers looked out of sync and couldn't get anything going. DeAngelo Williams saw more carries this week but didn't do much with the back just averaging 3 yards. The Secondary created turnovers after starters were out to keep the game close.

The Chicago Bears outlasted the San Diego Chargers by winning 33-28. Jay Cutler, who was intercepted on the first snap, didn't have a good game nor did the rest of the offense do all that well. A few bright spots on D kept the Bears first teamers in the game. The Chargers first team was absolutely terrible..not worth writing any more about - which I am happy being a Raiders fan!!!

Rest of Week 1 Preseason

As I promised here are the other games that took place over the weekend. Sorry on the delay. The Carver County State Fair took more out of me than I thought.

Washington Redskins narrowly beat the Titans 22-21. RGIII, Pierre Garcon nor Alfred Morris played in the game. Kirk Cousins played well and got much needed time to prove his is capable to be the back up in Washington. Helu proved to be the hand-cuff for Morris with solid runs despite starting Left tackle Trent Williams not playing. Typically your starting QB doesn't play the entire first half but the Titans did just that with Jake Locker. The additional work proved a benefit as Mike Munchak has revamped the offense this year. Chris Johnson showed he can still run the rock despite the Redskins being out of place on this two big runs. It was good to see the speed. The surprise was Shone Green and his ability to make something out of nothing. CJ struggles - watch out.

Denver Broncos beat the San Fransico 49ers 10 to 6. Peyton Manning was out there for just one series and nearly got knocked down on the third play. On other side of the ball, the 49ers Offensive starters only played one series as well. Really unfortunate as we could see how the first team O's were going to operate. Broncos have issued on the O-line due to injury.

Seattle Seahawks beat San Diego Chargers 31-10. Wilson did play three series and was just okay, Quinn and T Jack played the majority of the game and did very well against the Chargers D. Manti Te'o was a non-factor in his first game and didn't get a tackle. That cannot be good since the Chargers D is going to be very bad this year.

Miami Dolphins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 27-3. It was the tale of two starting QB's - Ryan Tannehill looked good and was moving well in the pocket while Blaine Gabert looked lost and struggled. It could be a long season for the Jaguars - perhaps they should have signed Tiebow! At least they would have two strong RB's in the backfield.

Detroit Loins rolled 26-17 over the New York Jets. Sanchez started off tough with an early pick six but rebounded to put up good numbers. Rookie Geno Smith played well until an ankle sprain forced him from the game. While rookie defensive end Ziggy Ansah made noise the secondary for the Lions were toothless.

The New England Partriots beat up the Philadelphia Eagles 31-22. Some wonder if Brady and company would survive without Welker or either TE - well Brady lead the Pat's on 2 80-yard TD drives.Michael Vick is in a battle with Nick Foles for the starting QB - Vick delivered well against the Pat's starters while Foles struggled against second teamers.

Arizona Cardinals pitched a shutout against the Green Bay Packers 17-0. Rodgers made a great throw to James Jones but only played out that series. Vince Young stepped in and did well after only being in camp for three days. Cardinals saw a glimpse of things to come with Palmer to Fitzgerald while they may have found a new RB too in Stephan Taylor.

Carolina Panthers beat the Chicago Bears 24-17. The Bears D showed up though with three first-half turnovers and a score. Outside of that it was an average day for the starters with nothing standing out.

The New Orleans Saints get back Payton as coach and beat the Kansas City Chiefs 17-13. Andy Reid is going to try to make use of Jamaal Charles this year as was evident during the game. Alex Smith will have the accuracy required to run the Reid O. After losing Joe Morgan earlier in the week, the Saints are looking for a replacement and it looks like it could be rookie Kenny Stills.

Houston Texans beat the Minnesota Vikings 27-13. Cordarrelle Patterson, the rookie, was thrown to early and did well and showed a bit of speed on kickoff returns too. The starters didn't play much though. Will look to the next game to assess these two teams a bit more.

Oakland Raiders sneak past the Dallas Cowboys 19-17. The Cowboy first D did well against the Raiders first team O but it was the second stringers that shined. With the WR and QB positions wide open, the Raiders may see a third stringer jump to starter.

The New York Giants outlasted the Pittsburgh Steelers in a boring game except for an exciting hook up of Eli and Cruz for a 57 yard TD.

The Buffalo Bills unveiled their rookie QB as they trounced Indianapolis Colts 44-20, EJ Manuel had a solid start with a QB rating over 100. Luck and starters just played two series.

Week 1 of Preseason

The 1st week of the NFL preseason is underway with just two games left to go. Thursday was the kickoff of the preseason, I understand that the Hall of Fame game was last Sunday, and for the most part the starters didn't play long. There were a few exceptions - Locker played the entire first half and Josh Freeman saw some extended time as well.

On Thursday the Ravens beat the Buccaneers 44-16. One of the big questions enter the season for the Ravens was who will step up as the #2 WR and how will the defense respond with all the changes and loss of key leaders. Veteran Jones didn't do much to separate himself from the rest of the crowd. Ravens did get a little scare when Pierce struggled to get off the field after scoring a TD but appears to be okay. The Buccaneers played without Revis, precautionary move, but for the most part - despite the score - the Buc's D played pretty well. Special team mistakes put the Buc's D in some bad positions. The Buc's got a little scare as well when Hillis looked to re-injure his knee but it is not reported that nothing serious happened. The bright spot for the Buc's was the play of rookie cornerback Banks - while it has little fantasy football impact it could mean the Buc's D won't give up 400 yards a game through the air this year.

Cincinnati Bengals beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-10. The Falcons saw a number of defensive defections from last year, probably the biggest loss was John Abraham but they did sign Osi Umenyiora. Trouble with the D-line is that Osi can't do it alone and they saw some sign of life as with the play of Johnathan Massaquoi. Other than that the Falcons didn't produce much. Stephen Jackson did little carrying the rock and the only big play for the first team was a bubble scream to Douglass for 40 or so yards. Under Dalton's leadership the Bengals have made the playoffs in both his first two years but will they be able to make it further this year. While the Law Firm will be the starter at RB, the Bengals saw rookie Giovani Bernard bang out some hard yards. Why is this important? Because if Bernard can prove he can get that tough two yards, he will become a TD poacher.

The Cleveland Browns beat the St. Louis Rams 27-19. Trent Richardson didn't see action and that gave Dion Lewis, and others, a chance to show their abilities. Lewis could be interesting this year as he was used a lot in the passing game along with a few carries. Brandon Weeden played well and answered a lot of the local media critics as they are singing the praise in the papers on Friday. With Stephen Jackson going to the Atlanta Falcons it opens the door for Daryl Richardson and Ishiah Pead to become the starter. Pead didn't help his cause by coughing up the football on his first carry. The biggest note from the game, outside the lack luster O performance by the Rams, is the dislocated shoulder of OL Saffold who protects Bradford's blind side.

Well I know there are more games left to look into for Thursday, I will tackle them tomorrow as well as the rest of the games. For the serious Fantasy Football owners, do your best to read the local rag's as they give great insight into the players and the games.

Keeper Dilemna

One of the leagues that I am the defending Champion, I have a dilemma on who I should keep or not keep as I will draft 12th in each round.

While many on the roster are easily discarded, a few tough decisions will need to be made. My ending roster was:

QB - Dalton and Wilson
RB - Ballard, Benson, Wells, Reece,  Alex Green, Bryce Brown, and Steven Jackson
WR - Megatron, Julio, Gordon
TE - J. Graham

Now I only get to keep two players but they cannot be from the same position and will cost me a 1st and 2nd round picks if I keep two players. One of the teams will be keeping Tom Brady and Marshawn Lynch.

In looking at a number of mock drafts I am seeing Steven Jackson taken early in the second round. I think a lot of hype around Jackson is the trade up in O's - Rams to the Falcons. I am leaning toward keeping Megatron - as I don't think he will fall to 12th in the 1st round - and Jackson - as I am unsure why type of RB's will be around at that point.

Thoughts....
