Last night we saw four games of the second week of the Preseason. Let's see what took place and what the local beat writers said about their teams.
Atlanta Falcons played the Baltimore Ravens which the Ravens won 27-23. The Falcons first teamers had their way with the Ravens D. Julio had three catches including one for TD on the first drive alone. Jackson ran the ball like a RB with fresh legs. The only concern was that Roddy White left the first quarter with a sprained ankle. The Ravens O did very little against the Falcons first team D despite the quick hit pass from Flacco to Smith for a 77 yard touchdown.Mike Preston, of the Baltimore Sun, rips up the Ravens thus far by slamming the poor passing of Flacco and ,"we've heard about offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie and Courtney Upsahw being overweight and John Harbaugh talked about the Ravens having to address the No. 2 and No. 3 receiver positions."http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/bs-sp-preston-ravens-column-0817-20130816,0,3923997.column OUCH!
Cleveland Browns showed up against the Detroit Lions with a 24-6 win. Unfortunately for the Browns, who have already lost Hardesty, lost another running back to a broken leg. Dion Lewis will undergo surgery on a fracture fibula. The Browns also lost linebacker Barkevious Mingo left the game with a bruised lung and remained in the hospital overnight. On the bright side, Weeden looked like a seasoned PRO and may have found a new WR in Jordan Cameron. Stafford and company played terrible despite Megatron not playing due to a precaution with the bruised knee. Jim Schwartz said, "We were poor in all three phases. On offense we had dropped balls, we didn't execute, we didn't move the ball, we didn't have any explosive plays and didn't score any touchdowns." http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130816/SPORTS0101/308150123/1126/Lions-sputter-after-spotting-Browns-early-lead-exhibition-loss. Probably the best hit was given by Bell who took out a streaker.
Carolina Panthers fell to the Philadelphia Eagles 14-9. The Eagles have a dilemna on their hands as both Mike Vick and Nick Foles played well. Beat writer for the Eagles Jeff McLane believes that Vick has the edge over Foles. Here is his article on other observations from the game: http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/inq-eagles/Eagles-Panthers-What-Did-We-Learn.html. The Panthers looked out of sync and couldn't get anything going. DeAngelo Williams saw more carries this week but didn't do much with the back just averaging 3 yards. The Secondary created turnovers after starters were out to keep the game close.
The Chicago Bears outlasted the San Diego Chargers by winning 33-28. Jay Cutler, who was intercepted on the first snap, didn't have a good game nor did the rest of the offense do all that well. A few bright spots on D kept the Bears first teamers in the game. The Chargers first team was absolutely terrible..not worth writing any more about - which I am happy being a Raiders fan!!!
